OVERVIEW

The EEA Young Engineer of the Year Award is presented to a young engineer working in the electricity supply industry who is judged to have made the most excellent contribution as an engineer, leader, and through community involvement.

AWARD PRIZE

The Award consists of a cash prize and certificate, with a total prize pool of $1,500.

Entrants will be shortlisted on 16 April 2010, based on a preliminary communication score assessed from the written submission.  Shortlisted entrants will be further assessed on communication at an oral presentation in early June 2010, and total scores will be considered in judging final results.

Entrants will be scored in all six key areas:

Note 1: Allows the entrant to provide an assessment of how their chosen project benefits society or otherwise, and that implications have been considered.

Note 2: Allows the judges to assess whether the entrant has undertaken wider "social responsibility" activities, or simply joined a recreational club.

ENTRY REQUIREMENTS

All entries must comprise of the following material:

  1. A completed official entry form.
  2. 4 copies of all documentation.
  3. A curriculum vitae (maximum of eight double-sided A4 pages), including academic achievements, employment history with career milestones, involvement with professional and business organisations, cultural and sporting interests, community involvement, and any other information relevant to the Award entry.
  4. A 250-word description of an engineering or technology project in which the entrant has had direct and substantial involvement. The report shall outline the purpose of the project, its options and implementation, and the project's contribution to engineering and technology must be outlined.
  5. A 500-word description of the entrant's involvement in the project above, detailing the level of responsibility and highlighting any significant or unique engineering or engineering management activities by the entrant.
  6. Relevant supporting information, including (where appropriate) images/photographs, diagrams and plans.
  7. Two written character references, confirming the entrant's achievement as an engineer, as a leader, and/or their contribution to the profession or the community. The judges may contact referees for further information or clarification.
  8. A high quality colour image of the entrant, either in jpg or tif format.

TERMS & CONDITIONS OF ENTRY

The entrant accepts and agrees to the following terms and conditions:

  1. All entries and supporting material must be received at the EEA by 5pm on Friday, 9 April 2010.
  2. The entrant must be aged under 35 as at 31 December 2010, and have a tertiary-level engineering or technology qualification.
  3. The entrant must be an Individual Member of the EEA.
  4. The entrant has obtained the permission of all relevant parties to proceed with the entry.
  5. The entrant gives permission to use any of the material provided for publicity and promotional purposes.
  6. Five (5) copies will be provided, and should further information be requested, this will be provided by the date specified.
  7. Should the judges wish to visit the site of an activity or ask questions of any person(s) involved with an entry, all reasonable efforts will be made to accommodate the visit and answer any questions posed.
  8. Should the entrant be announced as a finalist, the entrant must be available to give a presentation to a judging panel in May 2010, and must attend the formal Award presentation at the EEA Conference in Christchurch on 17-18 June 2010.
  9. The EEA will meet finalists' reasonable travel and accommodation expenses to attend the formal Award presentation.
  10. The entrant accepts that the judges' decision is final and that no correspondence will be entered into.
  11. The judges reserve the right not to make an Award where, in the judges' opinion, no entry of adequate standard has been received.
  12. Entrants and finalists from previous years' awards may re enter so long as they meet the 2010 conditions of entry.
